Cleveland Astra Sets the Stage for a New Era of Women’s Soccer in Northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland’s soccer future now has another cornerstone.

Cleveland Soccer Group has introduced Cleveland Astra, the women’s professional soccer club expected to begin play in 2028 as part of WPSL Pro. The announcement gives Northeast Ohio its clearest step yet toward a full professional soccer ecosystem, with Astra joining Forest City Cleveland in the city’s broader soccer expansion.

For a region with deep roots in youth, club, high school, and college soccer, Astra provides the women’s game with a visible professional destination close to home.

The name carries a celestial theme, with “Astra” tied to the stars and the idea of direction. That identity fits the club’s larger ambition: to serve not only as a professional team, but as a point of aspiration for players across Northeast Ohio who have grown up competing in the area’s soccer communities.

That matters.

For years, talented players from the region have had to look elsewhere for the next step beyond college or elite club soccer. Astra gives future players something different — a local professional badge to chase, a stadium to picture themselves in, and a club that can become part of the area’s athletic fabric.

The timing also feels significant. Women’s sports continue to attract larger audiences, receive greater investment, and receive more serious coverage across the country. Cleveland’s entry into that movement gives the city a chance to help shape what the next phase of women’s professional soccer can look like outside the sport’s traditional hotbeds.

Astra is expected to share the Cleveland Soccer Group’s larger vision for a soccer-specific stadium in downtown Cleveland’s South Gateway District. If completed, that project would provide the club with a permanent stage while also creating another venue for local soccer, college events, and community competitions.

The team will not play its first match immediately. A 2028 launch gives Cleveland Soccer Group time to continue building the club’s structure, fan base, and community presence. Still, the identity announcement gives supporters something tangible.
